Islington Alterations and Additions: Transforming an Existing Newcastle Home

Renovating an existing home is not simply about adding more floor area. A successful alterations and additions project should improve the way the home functions, create a better connection between spaces and provide a design outcome that suits the owners’ long-term needs.

This residential building design project in Islington, Newcastle NSW, was developed by Adam Murphy, Principal Building Designer at ANS Design. The design focused on improving the usability of the existing dwelling while creating a more comfortable, practical and visually cohesive home.

Older homes often have character and valuable existing features, but their layouts may not suit modern lifestyles. Rooms can feel disconnected, natural light may be limited and indoor areas may not relate effectively to outdoor living spaces.

The starting point for this project was to carefully assess the existing dwelling and identify opportunities to improve:

  • Internal flow between the original home and the new spaces
  • Natural light and ventilation
  • Everyday functionality
  • The appearance of the dwelling
  • The connection between indoor and outdoor areas
  • Long-term liveability for the homeowners

The 3D models were developed to help the homeowners clearly understand how the proposed works would relate to the existing house.

These perspectives are an important part of the design process. They allow the form, rooflines, external materials and relationship between the original home and the new addition to be reviewed before construction documentation is finalised.

Rather than designing the addition as a separate structure, the aim was to create a cohesive outcome that feels like a natural extension of the existing dwelling.

Improving Functionality and Liveability

The proposed alterations and additions were carefully planned to improve the way the home functions on a daily basis.

The design responds to the existing property while creating a more practical arrangement of spaces. The new work improves the relationship between rooms and provides a stronger connection between the home and the outdoor areas.

Careful planning also ensures that the additional floor area contributes to the overall usability of the property rather than simply increasing its size.

Balancing Existing Character with Modern Living

Alterations and additions require a different design approach from a new home. Existing construction, site conditions and the original building form all influence the final outcome.

For this project, the design seeks to respect the established character of the property while introducing improvements suited to contemporary living.

A successful addition should feel connected to the existing dwelling. It should improve comfort and functionality while also contributing positively to the appearance and long-term value of the property.

The final design provides a more functional and comfortable home with improved internal flow, a stronger relationship between the existing dwelling and the new spaces, and a more cohesive external appearance.
