Project Overview
This residential carport project in Willoughby, Sydney, was designed to provide practical covered parking while complementing the architectural character of the existing dwelling and enhancing the property’s street presentation.
Adam Murphy and ANS Design developed a design incorporating a traditional pitched gable roof, decorative architectural detailing and contemporary finishes to establish a cohesive relationship between the new structure and the existing home.
A defining feature of the carport is its carefully considered roof form, which reflects the established architectural character of the dwelling. The combination of terracotta roof tiles, white gable detailing and contrasting charcoal fascia and structural posts creates a balanced design that integrates traditional residential architecture with contemporary materials.
The open-sided structure provides convenient covered vehicle accommodation while maintaining a sense of openness across the property frontage. Its positioning also responds to the existing driveway, landscaped gardens and neighbouring development, ensuring the addition sits comfortably within the established residential streetscape.
The completed project demonstrates how thoughtful residential building design can transform a practical parking requirement into an attractive architectural addition, improving everyday functionality while respecting the character of the existing home and surrounding Willoughby neighbourhood.

Design Outcome
The completed Willoughby carport provides practical covered vehicle accommodation while enhancing the architectural presentation and functionality of the existing residential property.
The traditional pitched gable roof, terracotta roof tiles and decorative white detailing establish a cohesive relationship with the existing dwelling, while contrasting charcoal fascia and structural posts introduce a contemporary finish.
The open-sided design maintains a sense of space across the property frontage, allowing the carport to integrate naturally with the existing driveway, established landscaping and surrounding residential streetscape.
Carefully considered proportions, roof detailing and material selections ensure the new structure complements rather than dominates the existing home, creating an attractive and functional addition that responds to the property’s established character.
The result is a well-integrated residential carport that balances practical vehicle protection, architectural presentation and everyday convenience, making a positive contribution to the existing dwelling and surrounding residential character within the Willoughby City Council area
